Diffuser FAQs

European government regulations require a push and hold delay to start electronic devices. For this reason, you will need to push and hold the power button for about 1.5 seconds to turn on the device.

Your diffuser is out of battery. Be sure to use the included USB cord to charge your diffuser. It takes about 4 hours to fully charge. Not all USB cables are compatible with the Vessel diffuser, so if you have plugged in your diffuser to charge and it is still showing flashing lights after you unplug it and turn it on, check to be sure you are using the included cord and appropriate wall brick adapter.

First, ensure that you have adequate essential oil loaded into the diffuser bottle by removing the pump head and verifying that the oil level is above the end of the dip tube by at least ¼ inch or more. Insufficient oil in the bottle will result in the diffuser not being able to diffuse.

Second, ensure that the diffuser is turned on by pushing and holding the power button until the indicator lights on the top illuminate. You should hear a slight hum when the diffuser turns on. Depending on the quality of essential oil you are using, you should be able to smell the oil almost immediately after turning it on.

Atomizing, waterless diffusers are significantly different that traditional, water-based ultrasonic diffusers. Almost all the mist in traditional ultrasonic diffusers is water vapor. Hohm’s Vessel diffuser, on the other hand, is a waterless atomizing diffuser, which will put off much less mist than you may be used to. However, because it is pure oil being diffused, the smell will be slightly stronger depending on the oil you are diffusing. In addition, different essential oils may emit different levels of mist. Not all oils are created equal. In some cases, you may notice a large amount of mist with one type of oil, and a very small or seemingly non-existent mist with other oils. Either way, the scent emitting from the diffuser should be quite noticeable.

The answer is…it depends. How often you diffuse, how long you diffuse, and the intensity (low, med or high) at which you diffuse, all affect how long the essential oil will last. Specifically, the diffuser uses .3ml - .6ml per hour depending on the setting. So, on the lowest setting, a 15ml bottle of oil would last roughly 50 total diffusing hours. If you have your diffuser on for 4 hours a day that would roughly be 12 days of diffusing. If you ran it at full power, it would last 25 diffusing hours or roughly 1 week per 15ml bottle. Remember that diffusing straight essential oils will result in a stronger scent than traditional water-based diffusers so you may be diffusing much less time with the Vessel diffuser than you would with water-based diffusers.

While ultrasonic diffusers are virtually silent, all atomizing (waterless) diffusers utilize pressurized air to atomize essential oil into your space. The air pump will never be silent, however, some brands are quieter than others. The Hohm Vessel diffuser for example, emits about 35 decibels of noise which is the equivalent to a quiet whisper while many other units register at 40-50 decibels.

In order to keep the diffuser in good working condition, please make sure to perform the following maintenance steps at least once every 6 months. In addition, the maintenance steps should be followed each time a new kind of essential oil is used or if you notice a decrease in diffusion intensity or strength.

Maintenance Steps

1. Remove the pump head from the unit and disconnect the oil bottle from the pump head by unscrewing it.
2. Fill the dirty, empty essential bottle at least half way full with rubbing alcohol and clean with the small black cleaning brush included with the diffuser.
3. After cleaning the bottle, rinse it our with water and then pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol into the bottle.
4. Install the bottle with the small amount of rubbing alcohol back into the pump head and then replace the pump head back into the diffuser and let the device run for 5-8 minutes.
5. After 5-8 minutes power off the diffuser and remove the bottle. Pour our any excess alcohol and rinse thoroughly with water.
6. You should be good to add your favorite Hohm scent and continue diffusing.

Essential Oil FAQs

Hohm creates pure essential oils, so you can feel purely you. Our blends and single oils are free from fillers, carriers, and diluters of any kind. They are specially made for your aromatic pleasure through diffusion.

Pure essential oils are so potent they can break down certain plastics over time. So we package our powerhouse essential oils in glass bottles with glass droppers. Additionally, our glass bottles are frosted to block UV light and help your oils retain their beneficial properties.

Other companies choose to package their essential oils in amber bottles to prevent UV damage. But it turns out frosted glass protects your essential oils from the sun’s harmful rays just as much, while also looking a whole lot prettier.

Essential oils that are free from unstable carriers (like Hohm essential oils) and stored in cool, dark places can remain effective for years. However, we recommend using your oils within two years from the time you purchase them.

You can use Hohm essential oils like you would any other pure essential oil. However, we recommend diffusing them in your favorite spaces. They can be used in water-based ultrasonic diffusers, pure atomizing diffusers, and even passive diffusers.

All Hohm essential oils are both gluten-free and non-GMO, so you can be sure you’re diffusing only the best.

Our essential oils are all natural, meaning that the same oils you’d find in the plant are what’s in the bottle. Some people are allergic to plants, and more specifically to some constituents found in plants like limonene and linalool.

Most people who have allergies to these compounds only experience reactions when those compounds come into contact with their skin. However, if you’re concerned about diffusing your essential oil, try it out in a well-ventilated room and gradually introduce yourself into the space, just to test it out.

The majority of Hohm essential oils are steam-distilled or cold-pressed.

Steam distillation is the most common way to collect essential oils. Plant product is placed into a large vat with water. Steam then passes through the plant materials at a very high temperature. During this process, the plant’s essential oil binds to water droplets and the steam escapes the vat through a tube. As it leaves, it cools while traveling to a collection tank. In this tank, the now-cooled water separates naturally from the oil, leaving essential oil on top and plant water (also known as hydrosol) on the bottom.

Cold press extraction involves crushing plant material to collect essential oil. This method is often used for collecting citrus oils. For example, the oil in limes is stored in the peel of the fruit. To collect the essential oil, we take our high-quality lime peels and subject them to a high amount of pressure, which forces the oil out so it can be bottled up and brought to you.

Animals are typically more sensitive to essential oils than us humans. In some cases, essential oils (including Eucalyptus and Tea Tree) can be toxic, especially if they are ingested by pets. Although invigorating and energizing for us, Peppermint can cause irritation and distress when diffused around your fur babies.

However, other oils, like Lavender, can provide a calming aroma for your four-legged friends. Here are a couple of tips for using Hohm essential oils around your pets.
1. Ensure your diffuser is in a place where your pet can’t knock it over or put their cute nose in the mist of the diffuser.
2. Just like humans, every animal can be sensitive to essential oils. As you start using essential oils, be sure to watch your pet closely for signs of irritation and adjust accordingly.
3. Be super careful not to leave any containers (open or closed) where your pets can access them. If you suspect your pet has ingested any oil, contact your vet immediately.
4. Always diffuse in an open area where your pet has the option to leave the room if they want to.
5. Before diffusing your essential oils, consult your vet about which oils you should and shouldn’t use around your fur baby.

Fragrances are synthetic compounds that aren’t found in nature. These compounds are called captives. Captives are proprietary molecules that smell good, but haven’t been tested for long-term residual effects. These chemical compounds can be associated with or contain substances that are harmful to our bodies.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are naturally occurring. They are generally plant or resin-based oils, and contain chemical constituents. These constituents have been known to have beneficial effects without any of the potential negative effects that synthetic chemicals bring.

Pure essential oils aren’t easy to produce. Beyond thoughtful harvesting and pure distillation, essential oils should undergo rigorous quality and authenticity testing. Because this process is so expensive, other companies choose to add diluters or fillers, meaning you’re getting a low-quality essential oil. If an oil has a cheap price, you can probably count on it being cheap quality.

But at Hohm, we believe you deserve the very best. We work with trustworthy farmers, use high-quality equipment, and test our essential oils to ensure you’re getting the real deal, at a price that won’t break the bank.

Essential oils are generally safe for children, but there are some guidelines you should follow.

First and foremost, before using essential oils around your children, you should discuss it with your pediatrician. Avoid diffusing any essential oil around infants under a year old. Keep in mind that some people (especially your little people) are more sensitive than others, and may experience irritation with some oils. So keep a close eye on your kiddos while diffusing any new oil.

We suggest diffusing citrus oils like Lime or Sweet Orange for up to an hour to see how your child responds. If they experience any symptoms, stop using the oil immediately and consult your physician. And remember: never use oils as a replacement for medical care.

This can depend on your preference and the diffuser you are using. As a rule of thumb, start with 10 drops of your favorite Hohm essential oil. If the scent isn’t strong enough, you can always add more essential oil until it smells just right.

If you don’t want the hassle, keep in mind that atomizing diffusers like the Vessel diffuser take the mystery out of this question. Simply fill the atomizer bottle with essential oil and diffuse away!

Yes! You can use and return any product within a year of purchasing it. If you don’t like a scent, feel free to send the oil back and try another until you find the perfect scent for you.
